Pakistan’s Banks has been hit by the ‘biggest cyber attack in country’s history’.

Data from 19,864 cards belonging to customers of 22 Pakistani Banks has been put on sale on the Dark Web.

The hackers put up the dump, titled "PAKISTANWORLD-EU-MIX-01" with over 10,467 records, on sale on Jokerstash.

More than 8,000 of the cards in the dump belongs to at least nine Pakistani Banks and were available for prices ranging from $100 to $135 each.


Which banks are affected?

According to PakCERT's Threat Intelligence report, a total of 19,864 debit card details belonging to 22 Pakistani Banks are sale in the dumps circulating on the Dark Net.

Besides that, the Bank of Punjab (748) and Standard Chartered Bank (586) also among the affectees.

Most importantly, in the second dump release on Oct 31, the majority of cards were of Habib Bank (2,043).

How did the security breach take place?

One common way of carrying out this form of card cyber theft is through the card skimming devices.


The data appears to have been acquire through skimming and the hackers have also advertise it as 'skimmed data.'

When a credit or debit card is swip through a skimmer—often disguise and install at ATMs and Point of Sale (POS)—the device captures and stores the details store in the card's magnetic stripe of chip.

Therefore, thieves can then use this stolen data to make fraudulent transactions either online or with a clone counterfeit Banks card.

According to PakCERT CEO, the data was possibly either acquire from compromise ATMs or other places where the hackers had install skimming devices.

Now here’s what you can do to guard yourself against data theft:

Keep Updating Your Contact Information

Update your contact information like mobile number, address etc. regularly with the Banks.

Therefore, it will enable the Banks to notify you about any suspicious transactions.

Regularly Check Your Account Details

Besides that, keep checking your Bank account balance and transaction history, so that you are aware of any activity that you cannot recognize.

Keep Changing Your Banking Codes/Passwords

According to the State Bank's instructions, you should change your online banking passwords and card codes every month or at least every two months.

Keep the International Online Use of Your Card Restricted

Report a Suspicious Activity Immediately
