PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System for Stolen and Smuggled Mobile Phones

PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System Update:

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) launched a comprehensive initiative to discourage smuggling and theft of mobile devices, by blocking all these illegal handsets operating in the country. PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System.

The new system is called ‘Device Identification Registration and Blocking System’ (DIRBS). The system uses the distinct IMEI number of each device, along with other parameters, to help in identifying, monitoring and regulating such devices. PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System.

Also Read: PTA Online Complaint Management Service

The IMEI of illegal devices will be reported to the cellular companies and other concerned bodies and will be blocked later. The DIRBS was launched on Thursday the 10th May 2018 in collaboration with Central Asian Cellular Forum and the Mobile Industry here at PTA Headquarters Islamabad. PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System.

Chairman PTA Mr. Mohammad Naveed was the chief guest whereas Mr. Abdul Samad, Member Compliance and Enforcement PTA, gave a very detailed presentation on the benefits and working of the new system launched by PTA to curb the import and use of illegal devices in the country. PTA Mobile Devices DIRBS System.

The Ceremony was also attended by prominent IT and telecom industry experts, CEOs of telecom companies, and media community. Member Compliance & Enforcement answer questions from the media on the new system DIRBS during the event.

The telecom regulator of Pakistan will operate the DIRBS as a ‘Centralized Equipment Identity Register’ to discourage the use of mobile devices that are smuggled or illegally imported. This system will generate different lists, categorizing the legal status and authenticity of all handsets. Each distinct IMEI will be paired with a specific ‘Computerized National Identity Card’ (CNIC) belonging to its registered user, who must be officially connected through a particular cellular network.

Chairman PTA said that:
"The Authority is cognizant of telecom consumers’ needs and is taking number of steps to facilitate them in resolving their issues."
PTA chairman added:
“PTA has always been engaged in facilitating telecom consumers with best telecom services along with due protection of their rights. Chairman further added that the statistics of telecom growth in Pakistan are evident of the satisfaction level of telecom consumers with the quality of telecom services provided to them. He said that today the mobile operators have increased this coverage to over 65% of the population. Broadband subscribers that stood on 1.3 million till 2014 with limited speed offerings today has crossed a milestone of 50 million (2018) with mobile broadband speed crossing 20 Mbs (download) and fixed broadband speed crossing 100 Mbps (download).”
How will DIRBS work?

Once the DIRBS system gets activated by PTA and the database starts adding stolen, smuggled and counterfeit devices IMEI’s, this would render the devices useless and would be unable to connect to local mobile networks. All those reported stolen and smuggled handsets would become blacklisted in PTA’s database and they would stop working.

Not only would this curb imports of mobile devices via illegal channels but also give the users reassurances that the phones they are using are approved by PTA. PTA will also install the required hardware, software and infrastructure for DIRBS to enable the mobile phone producers and network operators to report to PTA and block any illegal device or businesses that deal in stolen devices.
Moreover, DIRBS will provide; updated ‘Black Lists’, ‘Exception Lists’ and ‘Notification Lists’ to the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) at regular intervals. Consequently, the MNOs will use these lists for blocking and unblocking of mobile devices and intimation to the subscribers, wherever required.

This step will enhance the government revenue and benefit the telecom ecosystem. This type of system is already being implemented in other countries which have shown positive outcomes. In Pakistan, we also hope such a system will bring some positive changes in the mobile world.

Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football for FIFA World Cup 2018 Made in Pakistan

Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football Update:

Adidas has introduced the official match ball of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the Telstar 18. The retro look is contrasted with high-tech in the form of an NFC chip to offer customers new possibilities. Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football.

So the new adidas Telstar match ball for the 2018 World Cup has a microchip inside it? Yep. But, what for? Good question. Let us explain what exactly the new NFC "Near Field Communication" technology does. Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football.

First thing to clear up is that this isn't the same as the Adidas Micoach Smart Ball. The NFC tech won't measure your shot power, curl and pass speed – It ain't quite as smart as that.

Also Read: FIFA World Cup 2018 Pakistani Sialkoti Football To Be Used in Matches

NFC is a digital technology that allows two devices to exchange data, and in this case you can unlock Adidas stuff on your phone once connected.

The chip? It's located at the top of the ball, under the little WiFi-Esque symbol. You can see the red circle in the picture given above which indicates that NFC Sensor Chip is installed there. Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football.

So How Does it Works?

Well, the NFC enabled device (smartphone) sends radio frequency signals that interact with the NFC tag (inserted inside the Telstar 18 ball). The signal allows your phone to communicate with the tag. Your phone will receive the information from the tag, which will then open the Telstar 18 experience. Adidas Telstar 18 NFC Sensor Chip Football.

How Does it Works on Android?

Make sure your phone is unlocked and NFC is enabled by swiping down the control center from the top of the screen, or open your Android's settings and activate NFC on the ""Wireless and Networks"" option. Tap the back of your phone onto the NFC logo on the Telstar 18 surface to launch the experience.

And iPhone?

It works on iPhone too. But only iPhone7/7Plus, iPhone 8/8Plus and iPhone X with iOS11 or newer installed, are enabled to read NFC tags. iOS doesn't have a native functionality to read these tags, so you'll have to download a third party app and use that. Just search NFC tag and you'll find one.

Do I need an app?

No. There's no adidas Telstar NFC App so to speak. You'll just need an NFC-reading app if you've got an iPhone.

The experience offers different functionalities like exclusive information about the product and adidas football content. Not that exciting, right? But it does also offer special competitions and challenges. You can film yourself doing these challenges with the ball and upload them. Plus features will be updated in the run up to the World Cup, so keep tagging.

Pakistan and The Ball

The Telstar 18 has been manufactured by Forward Sports based in Sialkot. Sialkot is known as the hub of world-class sports equipment and for the past few decades, it has been the biggest exporter of footballs to the world. Here are some of the facts about city’s phenomenal sports culture;
  • Sialkot is one of the most industrialized cities in the world with around 126 industrial units per square kilometers.
  • These industries earn about $2 billion annually making up about 10% of the country’s total exports.
  • The industries in the city employ around 400,000 people as well.
  • World’s biggest leagues like English Premier League, LaLiga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga, and UEFA Champions League use the same balls manufactured in Sialkot.
  • Sialkot accounts for 70% of the total demand for footballs to the world. More than 40 million footballs are exported every year from the city. The industries have enough capacity to produce 18,000 every day.
  • The city got global attention in 1982 when its footballs were used for the first-time ever in the FIFA world cup that year.
Not just footballs, the city is known to provide quality tennis, cricket, and hockey equipment as well. Furthermore, it is also home to the world’s second-best surgical instrument industry as well.
