5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 at Arts Council of Pakistan


5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 Update: Karachi is the world’s fastest growing city and constitutes Pakistan's biggest metropolitan area. Historically, the Karachi region has a rich archaeological heritage stretching back to the Neolithic period and the city's built heritage can be traced back to the medieval era, as different parts of the city are associated in legend and folklore with mystical events and religious figures.

Since the 18th century, many different communities have settled in Karachi and have contributed to its evolving landscape. The city has been an engine for economic and cultural growth far beyond its own boundaries, especially in the fields of trade, commerce, education, art and architecture, food, language, etc.

For this purpose and to to celebrate the socio-economic and cultural mosaic of one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse cities in the world that the first international conference on Karachi was held and after the successful of 4th International Karachi Conference, the 5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 is going to be held on 27th to 29th October 2017.

The primary objective of the 5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 is to highlight the importance of Karachi and all facets of its urban existence through a scholarly exercise, for understanding the role that it has assumed as a regional hub. Karachi’s resume will grow with its fast pace of development in the backdrop of globalisation and regionalisation, and the related geo-political upheavals that are visibly developing in this part of the world.

A secondary objective of the 5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 is to bring together local and international academic institutions, scholars, and development and social activists who have worked on Karachi, to engage with each other and with other like-minded local individuals for future academic endeavors, especially those relevant to the city. The holding of the conference and the publication of its outcomes will serve as a foundation template for prospective research and scholarly activity on Karachi.

In its fifth year, the Karachi Conference Foundation will host its 5th Annual International Karachi Conference 2017 on 27-29 October 2017 at the Arts Council Of Pakistan, predominantly on issues that not only define its own existence today, but those that are global in nature, crucially centered on social ecology, environmental degradation, and urban change. Important topics of discussion include solid waste management, proposed mass transit schemes, and the city’s changing skyline.

Additionally, the role of Karachi in the genesis of the country itself, both in regards to it being the first capital, and home to the founding father Muhammad Ali Jinnah, will be topics that will be analysed critically. For the first time, the conference includes panels that showcase cutting edge student research, to foster better understating and concern for the city and its problems amongst the professionals of the future. Acclaimed activist and head of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, I.A.Rehman, will be the keynote speaker.

The Karachi Conference aims at celebrating the socio-economic depth and cultural mosaic of one of the most ethnically and religiously diverse cities in the world. It seeks to highlight the importance of Karachi and all facets of its existence by bringing together research undertaken on our city by local and international academic institutions, scholars, development workers and social activists onto a single platform.
